Key Concepts
What ELA Qualities am I assessing in Native Studies?
I definitely think that all the ELA qualities can be assessed in Native Studies, although I'd have to pay particular attention Viewing and Representing are one of the best ways to assess Native Studies within the ELA program.
Curriculum Connections
I suppose that the one GLO that really stands out as pertaining to Native Studies was the one that mentions "respect, support and collaborate with others." The other qualities that exist in ELA can all relate to NAS, but to me, this is the best ELA quality that shows up in the curriculum.
Strategies and Lesson Plan Ideas
Here are some different ideas using the six strands of ELA for Native Studies.

Here are some different ideas using the six strands of ELA for Native Studies.
- Reading - I'd suggest using books with Native themes involved.
- Writing - A journal entry about colonization (for younger grades) or current issues (for older)
- Listening - Playing First Nations music in class while working might help tie the two lessons together
- Speaking - I like the idea of creating a talking circle, and allowing each student to have an opportunity to speak their mind
- Viewing - Have an art show showcasing different styles of Native Art and having students discuss it
- Representing - Students could create a project that showcases various aspects of Native culture. Examples could include art styles, music, foods, or dances.
